Clerks of a Colonial Sector

DESCRIPTION

Seprets

Overview

The Seprets are a race living mostly in Sector K-33. They quickly found common ground with humans, and largely because of that, despite their small numbers, they became the backbone of the colonial administration.

Seprets get along well with very different races. As traders who travelled all over the sector, they understand perfectly how varied the galaxy's peoples are and can find an approach to each of them.

The Sector's Second Class

Sector K-33 was colonised by families of the Empire of Golden Suns, and humans make up only about 2% of its population — yet they run everything, from companies to the army. Humans and Baarni form the elite and live in separate quarters guarded by agencies.

The second class of the population is the Seprets. They handle the second tier of government: petty officials, shopkeepers, bank managers — very often these are Seprets. Everyone else in the sector stands on the third rung and can hardly hope for more than a junior command post in the colonial forces or a minor clerkship.

In the countryside, humans and Seprets usually live on huge estates with thousands of slaves, while the locals live in villages, keeping an archaic, often tribal way of life.

Hated by Their Neighbours

Having become in effect the second ruling class after humans, the Seprets earn the contempt of the sector's other races. At best they meet dislike, and sometimes open hostility and hatred: it is the Seprets who are associated with colonial rule and exploitation.

They are hated even more than humans. Humans are far away, and few people have ever seen one, but the Seprets are right here.

Physiology and Family

Seprets do not see very well and make up for it with echolocation and excellent hearing.

They live in large families, often with several families together, and practise polyandry or polygamy.

Appearance

The illustration shows a Sepret in a white suit and hat, with a cane in hand and an emblem on the chest. The face is covered in thick ginger fur, with two tusks jutting from the mouth.

On the "Sector K-33" sheet a Sepret manager appears in the traditional white uniform — next to an officer of the Daur Family, a Hortis labourer and a Baarni in the Borson uniform of a colonial official.
